We are currently traveling around Australia and are just leaving nsw for Vic. We stick preferably to the coast as we love fishing surfing etc. and prefer camping away from caravan parks where we can have a campfire etc. we have a rather large but offroad van, could anyone suggest some remote camps please???

Do you have a smart phone? Then download the Campin' Australia Free app. It has more information than you will ever use.

You will struggle to find coastal
camp (not caravan park) where fire permitted. AFAIK (and happy to be corrected) there is nothing suitable till Lake Entrance.
Well, there is a place (been quite a while ago and cannot recall it name) not far away from border - beautiful bay do not remember about fire, but it is payable, though not "true" caravan park although no way you can call it "wild". Then there is 90
miles beach where plenty of
free camping spots and I reckon that you may find one where you can squeeze your caravan, though AFAIK no fire. Then after Seaspray (nice spot for caravan BTW, though in caravan park) till
Melbourne there is unfamiliar territory for me, but I do not believe that anything major, but quite a few caravan parks. From
Melbourne to GOR nothing apart of caravan parks - civilization everywhere. On GOR I new 2 good spots - one on Ottaway peninsula (fire permitted) and marvelous Johanna Beach - my favorite spot, though definitely no fire.
Enjoy Victoria.

Thanks guys, we use the free camps 6 book and numerous websites but all tend to be too commercial for our liking. Ottaway and Johanna definately sound like our style. Thanks again . :)

Problem with Ottaway and Johanna that they really close each to other, perhaps 20 km

I second Johanna, great free
camp spot. Right on the coast, but we were warned not to swim there due to
sharks.

I been there plenty of times, but never hear about
sharks. Anyway main beach not good for swimming due to current and only surfers can be seen, but if you go to right side you can find plenty of
rock pools to bathe.

We are happy to pay fees in campgrounds national parks etc, but just prefer the "wild" or "bush" campsites as such.. Cheers

Last time I looked (some time ago) Shipwreck Ck a bit too small for a van or even camper trailer but Thurra has a good range of sites.
Cape Conran is a great spot but ring ahead. There is also a free overnight park available.
Enjoy

Another top spot is Lake Colac (
Meredith Park) 571 in Camps 6. it is also a good spot to leave your rig and do the Great Ocean Road from there.
Safe travels
