Seems the possibility of electric cars is going to be on some companies agenda in the coming years.

Wonder if someone trys it with a 4by?.....How interesting would that be?..Lol.

Could be done i guess, just another thing oil companies would make disappear.

Imagine ordering one with a long range tank.....adds an extra 1.5 tonne to the car so that you can cover 1500kms. Then the government will need to put power power points in the outback to top up. Each spot would need a huge number of outlets as you would probably be stuck there for atleast a day or so even on a fast charge. School holidays would be a bugger.

We've had stretches of 1000 kms between fuel stops, so you'd need a big battery to haul 3 tonnes for 1000 kms.

They couldn't get mobile phone coverage throughout the country before they sold Telstra, so you'd be struggling to get power out there.

Probably wouldn't be feasible in the city.

I like my diesel too much to change, anyway.

.
No need for power points. A good solar panel on the roof would be the go.
75kW should do it. Bit more maybe to run a fridge and maybe even an espresso coffee machine. No worries.

Cheers

Electric cars in our lifetime is a pipe dream. Our little Astra returns better consumption than a Toyota Prius Hybrid. Toyota claim 5.5l/100 I think.
The immediate future will be in the European turbo diesels which give amazing fuel consumption. Our Astra diesel regularly delivers between 4.8 and 5.3 litres per 100km. I believe VW Golfs do even better. They can make diesel from an amazing amout of stuff. I believe you can even make diesel from mallee root (or so I was told).
While you can get these fuel efficient results, it will give the boffins time to fiddle around with other power sources. My bet is that once it is discovered it won't be a battery as we know it.
But I'm not holding my breath.

Trouble is, one of the big selling points for electric cars was silent motoring around town....now the Powers To Be want loudspeakers fitted to all hybrids so a noise can precede the car so sight impaired folk can hear them coming.
One of those v8 sound emitters may be the go...lol
