Day 24 Darwin Botanical Gardens and Beaches

Today we decided to have a quieter day driving wise and explore the coastline of Darwin. We started at the George Brown Botanic Gardens, it was a large garden and had some rainforest, mangroves, sculptures, amphitheatre and open woodlands. We had lunch in the cafe.

Our next stop along the coast was Cullen Bay a Ferry terminal and Cove has a lovely quiet and peaceful marina.

We then went to the National Trust Precinct which houses Burnett House (along with a couple of other properties) which is the only surviving example of B.C.G. Burnett’s Type ‘K’ and was unusual in being of two-storey configuration. The house was damaged by Cyclone Tracy in December 1974. From about 1983 the house remained vacant and was boarded up to prevent access from itinerants until it was restored in 1988 for the National Trust. It was officially opened on 18 April 1989. It then became known as Burnett House, after its designer.

Mindil Beach was next along our journey.

Bundilla/Vestey's Beach was the next one which had a very low tide whilst we were there.

We then drove along East Point Reserve and where Lake Alexander is situated. The site was originally an area of low-lying coastal marsh but was developed into a man-made lake for recreational use in 1991. The lake covers 3.5 hectares and has a maximum depth of 2.8 metres. Fresh seawater is pumped into Lake Alexander each day during high tide.

We then returned home and had enough time to wash the car before the sunset for the day.
