Nitmiluk National
Park is the Jawoyn name for
Katherine Gorge. It’s pronounced ‘Nit-me-look’, and literally means ‘Cicada Place’. It has 2 main sections to the
park: Nitmiluk Gorge to the south and Leliyn (
Edith Falls) to the north. It's a 90km drive between the 2 sections, it covers a vast area, including 13 impressive gorges carved from the ancient
sandstone country.
Today we drove to Nitmiluk National
Park to see
Edith Falls and started with the Leliyn Trail a circuit walk to cross the upper pool above the falls. The walk was graded 3 and 2.6km in length. Features of this walk include:
views of the waterfalls and Edith River from two lookouts and swimming in the upper
rock pools.
