Day 47 Ivanhoe River Crossing and Mini-Bungles

Today we headed to Ivanhoe Crossing. This iconic long, curved, concrete causeway over the Ord River was constructed to raise and improve an existing causeway built around 1930, and was opened in 1954. Since the start of the Ord irrigation project in the 1960's, the river now flows all year round, making the crossing impassable during the "Wet Season" when the river level is too high.

We then went and had some brunch under the mango trees. Once refreshed we headed to Mirima National Park often called "Mini Bungles," this park features unique sandstone formations similar to the Bungle Bungles. Hidden Valley has steep, broken walls of rock which come alive as they reflect striking colour changes due to sunlight variances. The 350-million-year-old sandstone features have been shaped in spectacular ways. The park covers 2068 hectares. We did three separate walks in the park through the rock formations to lookouts and even saw a couple of pieces of rock art.
