Day 71 Rocky Pool

Today we drove to Rocky Pool formed in the bed of the Gascoyne River and named for it's distinctive reddish rocky surrounds, the pool is very much a living part of the river. The Gascoyne only flows after significant rainfall and the river 'coming down' is a major event in the lives of those who live on or near the river. The Gascoyne catchment stretches some 600km inland to beyond the Great Western Highway.











On our return to Carnarvon we joined the Gascoyne Food Trail exploring local culinary delights which included stops at farms and eateries offering regional specialties. Carnarvon Western Australia is the hometown of many fruit and vegetable farmers. The 26km long drive trail includes 9 locations.

The first stop was at the Gascoyne Organic Farm we purchased a few things including Prince of Orange Potatoes, small like chats - we had never heard of them.





We saw so many different crops growing along the riverbank in only 2-3 kilometres.

Carnarvon Big Banana a 10-meter fiberglass structure located at Bumbak's Preserves and Ice Creams.



Then on the way home we found an Italian delicatessen, and almost everything she made was gluten and dairy free so we will be eating different meals than those we can usually find - it has been quite difficult in the outback to get food that I am able to eat so this was a real find. Even in the supermarkets it has been very limited in what we can purchase as a lot of the towns we have been in only have one supermarket. I really feel for those people with dietary requirements living in the outback - you would become a very accomplished cook purely out of necessity.
