Day 115 Ceduna

Today we looked around Ceduna before drove down the coast to Port Kenny on the Eyre Peninsula and then through some of the most beautiful fields of crops around Calca then towards the ocean and all the way down to Point Labatt.

Our first stop was Pinky Point perched at the edge of Thevenard, Pinky Point Lookout delivers sweeping views over Murat Bay and the busy Thevenard Port—the second busiest port in South Australia. The Pinky Point mosaic beacon (often called the mosaic lighthouse) is a 4.3 to 4.5-meter replica lighthouse built to commemorate all those lost at sea in the area.









Port Kenny lies on Venus Bay, a highly protected body of water characterised by tidal flats, mangrove swamps, small islands and shallow beaches. Nearby town Venus Bay lies close to the entrance of the bay, while Port Kenny lies on the northernmost side of the bay.







Streaky Bay is the major population centre of the area, and the centre of an agricultural district farming cereal crops and sheep, as well as having established fishing and tourism industries. In 1802, Matthew Flinders named Streaky Bay whilst on his voyage in the Investigator. In his log of 5 February 1802, he notes: "And the water was much discoloured in Streaks... and I called it Streaky Bay."












We continued driving to Point Labatt the home to the only permanent breeding colony of endangered Australian sea lions on the Australian mainland. As we got closer there was the most unusual sea mist looking like a cloud sitting on the land. By the time we got to the point where the sea lions were it was like a thick fog. We walked to the viewing platform and were so surprised to find a clearing in the mist just over the area where the sea lions were basking. Such a blessing to be able to view the sea lions and pups in their natural setting.













We continued back to Sceale Bay then on to Streaky Bay coastal towns on the western side of the Eyre Peninsula.
