Day 97 Albany

Today we left Margaret River and drove to Albany, We drove along the coast and stopped at Northcliff on the way to see the Understory Sculpture Trail a 1.2km trail circuit through stunning forest. From the majestic Karri canopy to coastal heath, with abundant native flora & fauna. 100 sculptures melded into nature, features original artworks by 50 plus state, national and international artists, writers and musicians.

Whilst we were there we looked at the Pioneer Museum to fill in time until the Sculpture Trail opened.
















We then drove to took the scenic drive to the D'Entrecasteaux National Park stopping at the Salmon Beach Lookout, Tookulup Lookut and Point D'Entrecasteaux. Nautre's Window is an attraction at Point D'Entrecasteaux. Point D’Entrecasteaux was named after the French navigator Antoine de Bruni D’Entrecasteaux who sighted the point on his way to Cape Leeuwin in 1792.

The spectacular views of the rugged southern coastline is a surprise. Standing on the viewing platforms high up on the cliffs the magnificent views remind us of the Great Ocean Road.












John Rate Lookout was named in honour of District Forester John Rate who in the early 1950’s discovered a third species of tingle tree, now known as the Rate’s tingle (E.brevistylis). He was killed in the forest by a falling karri limb. A short walk takes you to a timber boardwalk and platform lookout which provides a superb view over the Walpole and Nornalup Inlets Marine Park and the Southern Ocean.





Cosy Corner the limestone platform on the beach contains many blowholes that spurt water up to 6m high on rough days. However today was very calm although cool so no real blowholes for us to see. A great view of Cosy Corner and the islands offshore.
