Day 98 Albany

Today I started off in town having a hair cut, and passed Dog Rock on the way home. Yes it's "just a rock" and yes it looks like a dog looking up at the sky.



We drove to Mt Melville the views are spectacular of the town and the ocean when you climb the two level tower. It was built in 1976 and it is 22.9 meters high providing 360 views around Albany. There is a smaller lookout on the way which also gives views towards the port. Views of King George Sound, Princess Royal Harbour and the Albany township.










Albany Heritage Park and Padre White Lookout/Apex Lookout. Padre Arthur White (1883-1954) was a Chaplain in WWI (from 1916-1918) and subsequently a Rector of Saint John's Church Albany. He is credited with holding the first dawn service for Anzac day on 25 April 1930 on a spot near to the location of this lookout where, in 1914, many would have watched as the first and second convoys of troops and horses left for WWI.





The Botanical World Of Mary Delany exhibition was showing whilst we were at the park, so we enjoyed looking at the beautiful paper mosaics often confused for watercolour paintings. She created 985 pieces following her 85th birthday. Just goes to show you are never to old to start a new craft. Just amazing.






The Brig Amity is a full-size land-mounted replica of the 19th-century brig that brought the first European settlers to Western Australia.



The town of Albany is just full of beautiful homes and buildings, so many to look at as you drive through the streets. It features some of Western Australia's oldest vintage buildings, dating back to the region's first European settlement in 1826.




St John's Anglican Church, is a heritage-listed Anglican church on York Street. The church is the oldest consecrated church in Western Australia, consecrated in October 1848.



The Albany Town Hall is one of Western Australia's oldest and grandest historic buildings. Converted into a charming 310-seat regional theatre in 1983, it hosts a number of performances throughout the year. It was the first civic building constructed in the town in 1888.




The Uniting Church Albany - the foundation stone was laid on November 25, 1891, and the building opened on March 30, 1892, costing £1,416. It was the third Presbyterian church built in Western Australia.



The Methodist Manse built in 1903, replacing an earlier 1878 manse that was demolished. It is Victorian Rustic Gothic architecture, featuring local granite, elegant ornamentation, turned verandah posts, and rare octagonal chimneys.
