Edition 417: 22nd January 2016

Hi ExplorOz Reader,

With Australia Day coming up next week we expect many people are planning an extended long weekend. If you've not made a plan to get outdoors yet then why not use ExplorOz Trek Notes or Places to find somewhere to go for a quick getaway.

Our offices will be closed on Tuesday 26th January for this National Public Holiday.

With nothing over $20 make sure you grab a bargain before it's too late. These are all items that we've decided to discontinue or are old editions that must go. Stock up on a gift for later in the year, or keep for yourself. These are all good quality items in mint new condition at ridiculous sell-out prices. See sale here.

This year, we are making many small changes to how we do things. We're streamlining and simplifying. And it's all good news for Members. One of the big advantages of being a Member is the discounts we offer in our shop and we've just INCREASED the range of Member's discounts. This was previously a flat rate of 5% discount, but as of yesterday we are now offering up to 10% discount on shop products. Many of the savings available to Members have previously been somewhat subtle (eg. qualifying for this or that) so this is much easier for you to see the savings.

A Valued Contributor program is coming soon and this will be the new way to qualify for a free Membership Subscription, rather than the qualifying spend in the shop as previously. The Valued Contributor program will also include other features that will enhance your online profile based on the type of contributions you make and frequency. More info will be released in February.

Annual Membership subscriptions will continue to be available at less than the cost of a 1 night stay in some caravan parks at $49.95! Plus, for those that would prefer the convenience and savings of a once-only subscription we continue to offer Lifetime Membership.

We also have a new document being sent to renewing and joining Members titled "Your Guide to ExplorOz Membership". This is a handy to keep brochure that specifically explains the Membership features and how to use them.

We're also looking to create a new Member sticker for you to place on your vehicles - Lifetime Members and annual Members will receive these in the mail once we are ready to roll these out. These stickers will replace the Membership Card.

We're really excited about these new changes so look out for changes in 2016. It's all part of keeping ExplorOz relevant and viable.

We managed to get away after Christmas for a couple of weeks camping. Quite unlike any of our previous trips, this one had us observing a different demographic and in our blog we pose some questions for you. We're interested in your thoughts so please have a read and post your comments. The Art of Exploring

We also tested the Places near me feature using our phone in the vehicle and we're really happy with it. With such a large database Places is really doing its job of being able to accurately lead you to a suitable campsite when it's getting late. Just pick up your phone - go to Places - activate "Browse by: My Location" and up comes a list of places, showing distance and direction from your position. You can easily refresh the list or filter to only show POIs of interest (eg. camps). Perfect for those long hard days on the bitumen when you want to pull up a quick overnight road stop. Let ExplorOz show you the way.

Time out of the office is when we do our best forward planning for ExplorOz, and 2016 is going to be a challenging year as we have so many new things to bring out - with apps high on the agenda, plus a release to update EOTopo 2016. These things are coming but are not imminent. The support of our Membership goes a long way to making changes possible so please if you wish to help, join up or renew. Membership Available Here.

Coming home after a trip there's always so much cleaning and packing away to do but we do urge you to remember that ExplorOz is built upon you sharing your experiences back with us.

In particular, go through all your photos and for every Place you photographed, upload a selection of your photos to the applicable page in the ExplorOz Places section. You can do this directly off your phone, or you can use your computer.

If the Place description is lacking, please send us something we can publish. We are keen to have the Places page as accurate and informative as possible and if you've been there then your input is of value to others. All we need to know is what's there! The easiest way to communicate this is to click the Alert Admin button on the correct page and send us the relevant information.

Another worthwhile contribution is to rate a Place by leaving a Review. Of course, you can also create NEW Places (coordinates required) - just be careful to check "Nearby Places" in case a listing is already in the system. Did you know you can find coordinates for any Place from using EOTopo online? Just hover your cursor over a place - coordinates are displayed top right corner of the map.

As announced in last week's newsletter, we've added a new tool that allows you to change the display order of images and this applies to Places photos too. So if you upload new photos and you think they better depict the area than what's currently there, you can shift the order of the photos to show any photo in any order - just drag and drop.
