Cookville is a tiny, peaceful seaside settlement located at the southern end of
Adventure Bay on South
Bruny Island. It is often considered a "local secret," sitting just past the more developed parts of
Adventure Bay and serving as a quiet alternative for those looking to escape the main tourist crowds.Named in honour of Captain James
Cook, who anchored the HMS Resolution in
Adventure Bay in January 1777 to replenish
water supplies from nearby Resolution
Creek.In the 1820s and 30s, this area was a significant shore-based
whaling station. You can still see remnants of this industry at Grass Point, a short walk away. Many of the historical sites in the area, including the nearby Bligh Museum, were built using thousands of convict-made bricks brought from Variety Bay.One of Tasmania's "60 Great Short Walks" starts here - Fluted Cape Walk. The track takes you past Grass Point to the top of 272m high dolerite cliffs for spectacular ocean
views.
