In 1850 James Dunn built a hotel near this site to cater for the increasing trade from the bullock and mule teams that were carting copper ore from Burra to the port of Port Wakefield.

To cross the deep River Wakefield a wooden bridge was built and this bridge became known as Dunn's Bridge.
