Information

Miena Dam is a rockfill dam built just down stream of the original multiple arch buttress dam made of concrete. This structure was the first dam at this location, built in 1922 to impound the Shannon River. This caused the flooding of two smaller dams to create the Great Lake. The lake supplies a reliable flow of water into Shannon Lagoon to ultimately reach the turbines of the Waddamana hydro power station.

The buttress dam is sometimes below the water level after a period of heavy rains. Then the lake backs up against the main dam.
