Miena Dam is a rockfill dam built just down stream of the original multiple arch buttress dam made of concrete. This structure was the first dam at this location, built in 1925 to impound the
Shannon River. This caused the flooding of two smaller dams to create the Great Lake.
The lake supplied a reliable flow of
water into
Shannon Lagoon to ultimately reach the turbines of the Waddamana power station, now closed. All the
water now flows north to the
Poatina PS
The buttress dam is sometimes below the
water level after a period of heavy rains. Then
the lake backs up against the main dam.
