Red Dog Gorge, known as Manuwarra to the Yindjibarndi Traditional Owners, is a spectacular
sandstone gorge and
permanent waterhole within
Millstream Chichester National Park in Western Australia's
Pilbara region.
The gorge features rugged
red rock walls, a deep pool and seasonal waterfalls following heavy rainfall.
The gorge is culturally significant to the Yindjibarndi people and forms part of the Millstream
water catchment. The name Manuwarra is a Yindjibarndi word meaning "heaps" or "masses" and was adopted in the naming of the Manuwarra Red Dog Highway.**Access Restricted:** Red Dog Gorge was once a popular local swimming and
recreation destination, but public vehicle access was blocked in 2018 due to safety concerns associated with the adjacent active Rio Tinto railway. Barriers were installed at former access points to prevent unsafe railway crossings.
The gorge also lies within a public
drinking water catchment, where swimming,
camping and recreational driving are prohibited. There is currently no confirmed authorised public access route. Do not cross the railway or bypass access barriers. Check with DBCA or the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation for any future changes to access arrangements.
