There is a small dedicated 4WD training area within the Lerderderg
park — essentially a locale with short tracks and small hills for basic skill building and practice. It’s often used informally as a starting point before heading deeper into the
park’s network of tracks.The
park and surrounding Lerderderg–Wombat area contain a variety of 4WD tracks from moderate to challenging — often unsealed, rocky, rutted, and with
water crossings.
Blue Gum Track and other internal
routes are commonly driven, linking up points like O’Briens Crossing, Upper Chadwick and Firth
Park. After wet weather, many of the tracks become muddy, soft and more difficult — best tackled with recovery gear and good clearance.Community training daysLocal 4WD clubs frequently host training and informal runs at Lerderderg State
Park — for example, free 4WD training days have been held in recent seasons.Tracks in this
park can be seasonally closed or restricted (especially after rain or during fire danger periods). Always check Parks Victoria’s current alerts before heading out.TerrainTerrain ranges from dusty dirt roads to steep, rocky and rutted tracks — good for building 4WD skills but can be demanding after wet weather.Campspots & facilitiesAmblers Crossing and O’Briens Crossing have
camping access — often 4WD-only for Amblers. Basic
camping and picnic spots are available, but you must be self-sufficient (
water, recovery gear, etc.).
