The aptly named "Mount Sandy" is a large conical mound, the top of which is
bright red sand. At 244 metres above sea level, the Mount is situated on the western side of the Stuart Highway just to the south of the Ingomar Station access Road. Only a kilometre south of Sandy, the Stuart Highway climbs approximately 50 metres to a broad plateau giving good
views back to Sandy and the surrounding country to the north and west. It is 8 kilometres north of the Ingomar overnight stopping area which has an imposing view of the surrounding countryside. I reckon the naming of Mount Sandy is proof that the outback people maintain a healthy sense of humour.
