In 1884 after the end of the convict era an Italian entrepreneur Diego Bernacchi arrived with his family on Maria Island who saw potential for wine making and silk. His lease of the island was considered advantageous by government of the day and in 1887 he expanded his operations to include agriculture, cement, timber and fishery and
Darlington became a township of over 250 people. This is building became the family
home and behind was the Royal Hotel.
