Mount Rufus is a challenging alpine hike in
the Lake St Clair region of
Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National
Park. Rising to 1416m, the mountain rewards experienced walkers with expansive
views across Tasmania’s Central Highlands, including Mount Olympus, Mount Hugel and
Frenchmans Cap.The Grade 4 circuit walk is approximately 19km return and typically takes 7 hours to complete. The track climbs steadily through rainforest, alpine heath and rocky ridgelines before reaching the exposed summit area. Along the route are alpine tarns, dolerite formations, snow gums and seasonal
wildflowers, including the spectacular flowering scoparia in early summer.Weather conditions can change rapidly at any time of year and
the summit is exposed to strong wind, rain, snow and low visibility. Walkers should carry proper alpine clothing, food,
water and navigation equipment. Snow and ice may make sections difficult or impassable during colder months. The walk begins near Cynthia Bay at Lake St Clair. National
Park entry fees apply. Facilities,
camping and accommodation are available nearby at the
Lake St Clair Visitor Centre and surrounding accommodation areas.
