Robe Lighthouse - built in 1972 to replace historic Cape Jaffa Lighthouse (now located on Marine Parade in
Kingston SE) originally located on Margaret Brock Reef.
It is a star shaped concrete tower 3.5metres wide at base, slanting out to 5 metres wide at the top. The light array has 3 vertical banks, each consisting of 5 200 watt headlight type lights which show a ‘light character’ of 3 flashes every 10 seconds and visible up to 37 km out to sea.
The lighthouse is automatic and has a power plant beside it which starts automatically if mains power fails.
This one is not the first in
Robe. A small wooden one with a kerosene lamp was located on a
rocky outcrop on the eastern end of Main Beach. This one started in 1895 and was there to guide ships away from hazards east of
Cape Dombey.
The coastal trail runs east and west past the lighthouse.
