Work ceased during WW11 and resumed in 1948 with all concrete work completed by 1953
Quality of concrete mix resulted in it being Australia’s most leakage free dam
1st major dam in Australia designed specifically to provide flood mitigation as
well as providing storage for Urban
water supply. Flood mitigation for
Brisbane &
Ipswich was demonstrated during the 1974 floods.
It even has a 4 megawatts Hydro Electric Station which was commissioned in 1953, decommissioned in 1978, recommissioned 1988.
