Point Malcolm Camping Area is a remote coastal
bush camping location within
Nuytsland Nature Reserve, east of
Esperance and west of
Israelite Bay. The
camping area is set back from the coastline behind a low
hill, providing some shelter from prevailing winds. This is a popular destination for self-sufficient 4WD travellers seeking an isolated coastal
camping experience, with fishing, beach walking, photography and exploration of the surrounding rocky coastline being the main attractions.A sandy 4WD track continues from the
camping area over the
hill to
Point Malcolm itself, where visitors can explore unusual contorted rock formations,
limestone-free rocky coastal scenery,
sand dunes and beaches. A
historic well is also located nearby, although it can be difficult to find. Refer to the separate
Point Malcolm and
Point Malcolm Well Place listings for further information.Access to the area is via remote 4WD tracks, including the Telegraph Track and the route through
Israelite Bay. Conditions vary considerably and may include deep sand, corrugations, rocky sections and muddy or waterlogged tracks after rain. A
well-equipped, high-clearance 4WD and appropriate recovery equipment are essential. Access may be impassable following wet weather. The
camping area is very remote, with no nearby shops,
drinking water or other
services. Visitors should be completely self-sufficient with adequate food,
water,
fuel, communications and
camping equipment, and take all rubbish away.
Point Malcolm is an excellent base for exploring this remote stretch of coastline and the historic sites associated with early pastoral settlement and the old telegraph route towards
Israelite Bay.
