Gibraltar Rocks
Lookout is a rugged, off-the-beaten-path
vantage point situated in the spectacular wilderness adjacent to Kanangra-Boyd National
Park and the Jenolan area. Offering commanding, uninterrupted
views across the deep valleys of the Blue Mountains region, this spot rewards those who make the journey with sheer serenity and exceptional photography opportunities. On a crisp, crystal-clear day, sharp eyes can spot the
historic Hydro Majestic Hotel glinting on the escarpment way across the valley in
Medlow Bath.
Unlike the highly commercialized lookouts further north in
Katoomba, Gibraltar Rocks remains completely undeveloped, providing a raw "
seat-of-your-pants" wilderness experience far away from the tourist buses.Track & Navigation InfoAccessing the
lookout is an adventure in itself and is strictly a high-clearance 4WD proposition. The main route follows the Gibraltar Trail / Waterfall
Creek Trail loop.
• Track Condition: Rated as medium to difficult depending on recent weather. The fire
trails leading here are heavily rutted, feature deep
washouts, steep muddy pinches, and tight, scratchy tracks where "bush pinstripes" are practically guaranteed.
• Vehicle Requirements: High clearance is non-negotiable. Low range and a rear locker are highly recommended, especially after rain when the clay sections turn into a soap-slick slide. Single vehicles should exercise extreme caution; recovery gear and a winch are highly advised.
• Hiking / Walking: Not recommended.
The loop is an active 29 km 4WD circuit with blind corners, heavy vehicle traffic, and no dedicated pedestrian paths, making it unsafe and impractical for standard bushwalking.
Camping & FacilitiesFor those looking to turn the track into an overnight trek, remote
camping options are available nearby.
•
Gibraltar Rock Campground: A basic,
clearing-style
bush camp nestled in the trees near the track.
• Nearby Sites: Alum
Creek Campground and the humorously named Snake and Nip
Camping Ground offer alternative flat spots to pitch a tent or open up a rooftop setup.
• Facilities: None. This is completely self-sufficient, remote
bush camping. You must bring all your own
water, firewood, and a portable
toilet. What you pack in, you must pack out.
• Restrictions: No domestic pets or dogs allowed (borders national
park protection zones).
