Information

When somebody refers to a place as a river, what naturally comes into mind is that huge, fresh body of water that gorges into soil and rocks. But if what you will be referring to Adelaide River in Australia, you better think of something else. Adelaide River is actually a residential suburb in the country's Northern Territory. Based on the 2006 Australian census, Adelaide River has a 190-strong population. It is situated about 113 to 114 kilometers from the capital city, Darwin, and 201 to 205 kilometers from Katherine. Adelaide River has a postcode of 0846. It belongs to the federal division of Lingiari and the state district of Daly.
Adelaide River features the actual body of water by which the community is named after. You can also find here the Stuart Highway. The now non-operational North Australia Rail also crossed through Adelaide River. Northern Territory: The completion of the Alice Springs to Darwin standard gauge rail link in January 2004 resulted in a National rail Network linking all mainland State and Territory capital cities. A railway between Darwin and Pine Creek (253 km) became operational on 1 October 1889. The Australian Government took control of the Pine Creek Railway from 1 January 1911. It operated until 1 July 1918, when the line became part of the Commonwealth Railways. The former North Australia Railway linked Darwin with Birdum - a distance of 511 km - by 1929. It was never profitable and has been closed for many years.
The Adelaide River suburb, obviously, got its name from the river on which banks it was built. Its history dates back to the time of the construction of the overland telegraph line, when the construction laborers inhabited the place as a camp site. It was in 1873, upon the inauguration of an eatery, that the site became sort of hailed as a residential area. This was further established when a police station was constructed six years after.
