Robe is a small coastal town on South Australia’s
Limestone Coast, about 337 km south-east of
Adelaide on the shores of Guichen Bay. Established in 1846, it served as an early colonial port and later became a transit point for thousands of Chinese migrants heading to the Victorian goldfields. Much of its 19th-century architecture remains, including old government and maritime buildings that reflect its former role as a busy trading centre.Today Robe is a quiet fishing and holiday town with a permanent
population of around 1,200. Key features include the
Cape Dombey Obelisk, Long Beach with vehicle access, and nearby conservation parks offering coastal walking and 4WD opportunities. The town provides basic
services, accommodation options, and access to beaches, reefs and local fishing areas, making it a practical stop for travellers exploring the
Limestone Coast.
