Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has any info on the availability of block ice in either Adelaide before we leave on our trip or in Broome before we hit the GRR?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Lloyd

Lloyd,

Why not make it yourself?
The problem with buying block ice is the quantity usually sold will half fill your icebox, leaving less room for food, etc.

I have two containers that produce ice about three inches (75mm) thick in my home freezer and when placed side by side, cover the bottom of my Evakool. I could make them thicker, but that reduces the amount of storage space for food and drink.
I usually add a bag or two of crushed ice and the ice lasts for about 5 to 8 days, depending on where I am and the ambient temperature over that period.

Having said that, I seldom take an icebox on extended trips as availability on replacement ice is often not worth the effort and the space can be better utilized for other gear.

I use juice bottles in 2.4 or 3 litre size; the brands with a carry handle. They are firm clear plastic and make good ice bricks or spare drinking water containers.
