Hi all,

We are about to leave for the Cape on Wednesday and have just read in the Trek Notes that to leave the Palmer Gold fields via Palmerville there are locked gates through the Station. Is this still the case and (obviously) do you have to have PRIOR permission fron the Station to travel through, ie a phone call arrangement or a more detailed application well in advance. I have no worries re seeking permission and are happy to do so. If any one has been through this area recently up to date info would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Mike.

Do not under any circumstances contact the station owner or attempt to travel through this property. I would fear for your life.

An alternate route was opened by Cook Shire Council but has subsequently been closed as far as I can determine. Best bet is to contact the Cook Shire Council to see if that route- compulsorily acquired by them a few years ago is traversable. If it is, I suggest you stay well away from the homestead and do not camp anywhere along the route until the Maytown area.

If it were me, I'd give it a wide berth, with the owners out on bail on a murder charge who knows what may happen.

Keep well away from this area, it would have to be one of the most dangerous places in Aus particularly with them out on bail.

With written permission to traverse the newly acquired road some years back, I was sufficiently scared by the harassment of this couple that I phoned Laura police who advised me to abandon my plans.

I was thinking of going on the 'Palmerville Rd' from just north of Laura to Chillagoe via Fairlight and Mt Mulgrave stations. Should we avoid this route too??

Agree - that route North - South is fine - just don't cut across from Palmervale Station to the goldfield
