That would have been interesting, Peter.
To get to my first job in the NT, back in June, 1964, I travelled from Mt Isa to Alexandria,
Alroy Downs, Cresswell Downs, Anthony Lagoon, Eva Downs and
Rockhampton Downs, where I got off. There was one other passenger, and he was going to
Tennant Creek. The "terminal" @ the Isa back then was a tin shed, about size of a double garage. Much different to the terminal that's there today.
Also worked at Headingly Station for a number of years. We upgraded the
airstrip there in the mid-80's, with an elevating scraper and the station
grader. Prior to that, whenever it rained the 'strip would fill with water, and become unserviceable for many days. Carted a lot of gravel from a nearby ridge, and built up the strip to provide almost all-weather capabilities.
While I'm "name-dropping" too, Peter, also managed
Gregory Downs for 2 years in the late '80's, so your thread has been a real nostalgia trip for me .
Thanks,
Bob.
