Jomi
We are heading to diamantina NP via
Charleville,
Windorah,
birdsville from
Brisbane. We leave in 5 weeks. We would like to take our canoe with us but are unsure if there will be any water in the creeks for us to put it in. Has anyone travelled this way lately. Are there any good spots to put a canoe in.

Hi Jomi, plenty of
places to put your canoe in. Cooper Ck to the east of
Windorah has a huge
waterhole on the Cooper Ck upstream from the
bridge. Diamantina has quite a few waterholes (some could be getting low with a lot of mud along the shores).
Lake Constance and other smaller holes on the Warracoota Circuit and
Hunters Gorge are worth it.
Birdsville has
the lagoon next to the town kept full by the town
bore.

Thanks for that info, wasn't sure if these creeks held much water or any when it is so dry.

For sure!
The Diamantina at
Birdsville is a great place to canoe...
Enjoy!

I don't know which way you are getting to
Birdsville but there was a good spot at the "Dig Tree" near
Innamincka.
Hopefully others who have been there recently will let us know if it is still navigable.

there was water in the creek at
The Dig Tree 5 weeks back, but not as much as i saw at
Birdsville and
Windorah. still enough to go for a paddle on back then though.

Just up stream on the Cooper from
the Dig Tree where the road
bridge crosses the Cooper in Sep 2011.
And you never know if there is deep enough water on the eastern side of Big Red. Of course it could be a very boggy walk getting to anything deep enough to float in. That would be a story to tell. The day I went for a paddle at Big Red".

there's still water on the Eastern side of Big Red at the moment, but nothing like what was there in the past few years
View from above looking East over Big Red
the above
pic can be deceptive though, that
pic above makes it look smaller then it actually is in size, though not sure how deep it is. you drive straight out to
Little Red now though, no big detours around the water like there was in 2010.

We just returned from
Diamantina lakes and
coopers Creek and used our canoe every other day. We successfully canoed the Coopers, Diamantina, Thomson, Barcoo (huge river with people sailing also) and the Bulloo. Sixteen day trip from
toowoomba to
windorah and
diamantina lakes to
boulia,
winton and
longreach then down to Lockern NP thern WelfordNP and finally
Idalia NP. The canoe was alot of fun to see birds and animals most don't get to see.
