I'm in Perth and Decided to finally put some kind of roof rack on top of the Surf and get the bulky chairs and tents on the roof.
Did my research at www.rhinorack.com.au and found the models of rack and basket I wanted. Priced on the website at AUD $269 for the racks and AUD$169 for the basket.
Rang a couple of local 4wd shops and got quoted $299 and $239 at each place. So I range Jaram Products Pty in Welshpool WA (distributor for Rhino) and got the exact same prices. I told them the prices I got off the website and asked why there was such a huge difference. His answer was "that's a Sydney price, you've got to allow for freight". I laughed, thanked the gentleman and hung up. What freight company are they using!??
Should I buy them from Sydney and organise my own freight? Anyone know what the heck is going on there?

Jeff-wa,

If you're looking atthe black sports-style racks, check out Rak's version. I have a set and they're excellent. You can also get mounts for fitting a basket but you'll need to pick up the basket from someone else. They have telescopic crossbars so you can change vehicles without having to buy a different length set. They're in Sydney but ship anywhere as part of the price. Website is www.roofracks.com or ring them on 1300 888 231. Bloke I dealt with was called Phil and seemed to know his stuff. Let us know how you go.

It's called the WA Four Wheel Accessory Suppliers price fixing ring. Thought that sort of thing was made illegal years ago to stimulate competition!
Try Russel at ARB if you haven't already.

Jeff hi,

I live in Perth too and have just purchased a part for the boat trailer
through e-bay. The seller lives in Victoria and ended posting it
using busfreight $22 all up for courier pick-up from his house, drop off to the depot,
bused over to here and then courier to my door.
The item was a retriever-mate which weighed ~ 10kg.

Took 5 days. Bloody fantastic and thats insured too.

Find the best price in Oz over the net and then ask the local shops over here
if they price match! It has worked for me numerous times.
They don't like it but if they want your business, they should come good.

good luck

cheers

Jeff, I have a set of Rhino Racks that came off a Ford Raider. They are not the sports type and do not have the basket. I don't know if they will fit the surf but would have to go close. You can have them for $100.00

Regards

$325 Fitted. A Little more expensive but considering he'll come and do it it's not unfair. But they are clip on type, I'd rather save the dosh.
