I want to buy a specific model of car top boat and outboard. When I was in Brisbane on holidays I got a written price out of interest, I also found on the internet a written price for the outboard motor (also a Brisbane based business). Now back home in Adelaide, I went to the dealer and asked for a price on the same boat and motor. The boat came in at $361 more or a 17.5% markup. The motor came in at $429 more or a 19.5% markup. While I expect a loading for freight that can’t be the only reason. When I tried to do a deal with the salesman, he said – go to Queensland and buy there (I nearly did buy the motor then, but had no idea how much more SA would be). I just checked on Victorian boat dealers and found that they almost matched Brisbane prices. I guess I will be taking my money interstate, sad.

Had a similar situation with a local marine dealer.
They were doing a boat package and which was very good. They confirmed it in writing.
Around the same time I went to Sydney for the boat show and Yamaha was doing a very good finance deal if you bough a Yamaha motor in a package. Got approval.
Went back to the dealer and said I will buy the boat using Yamaha finance.
They withdraw the deal as they said they will have to increase the price to cover the finance paperwork.
I did not buy the boat locally and went to a Sydney Marine dealer a got one there.

Thats a bit rough on your behalf, sure get it interstate if you find a better price but there are many reasons why one may be dearer or cheaper than another place.

Thinking logically; in your own mind do you think the salesperson at the place in Adelaide would have denied a sale if he/she could compete on the price plus they would of got other sales from you for other gear.

Freight from Queensland to the eastern seaboard is a lot cheaper than to Adelaide and the Adelaide company might not have the buying power of the others nor stock holding.

We are an Adelaide based business and can be competitive on most stuff but there are things we can even come close to from interstate sellers and to the customer we are ripping them of blind and going to make a BIG fat profit...... some prices are even below our buy price.

The other thing we see is people who buy stuff from overseas or interstate and expect us to offer aftersales support and handle any warranty claims for free for them.... they all of a sudden turn very angry and abusive to wards our staff.

So before you think the local seller is taking you for a ride think again, there may be many other reasons why he/she can not compete that is out of his control..... lucky you don't live in Western Australia.

I understand your point and did not expect them to price match, just be competitive. I can freight a car from Brisbane to Adelaide privately for $500 so I know what freight costs.

I would be interested to see a written quote for $500.00 to transport a vehicle from Brisbane to Adelaide!
I have a few vehicles moved & there is no way that is a standard rate.
