Well! We are here at the Warrumbungles!

Bloody hot! Arrived at 4 pm and only 4 other campers! I'm glad I booked! Normally in cooler weather the place is packed. It was 36 deg when we arrived and tomorrow it supposed to be hotter. We will see how it goes and maybe head south somewhere! I forgot the fires went through here a while back, the Visitor Centre has burnt down and a temporary one is set up in Camp Blackman. Definaty no walking here at the moment. Catch you all later if we survive the heat! Michael.

Hi Michael,
Head to Mt Kaputar NP just east of you.
January 2013, when it was 40 degrees plus in Narrabri it was only 27 at Mt Kaputar.
The camping area has an amenities block with hot showers and 240 power. Great walks taking you out to the edge of the escarpment.

Yes, I agree. Mt Kaputar NP has a much higher elevation and is always cooler than the Warrumbungles. It is a great park.
Cheers

Forgot to add it was 38 around Geraldton yesterday so if your heading South to get away from the heat it will want to be a LONG way south......LOL

Michael,

Agree with Navigator, about Mt Kaputar, cool as, and it's like you're on top of the world.

Probably a bit far to try for the Atherton Tablelands!

Came down from Winton on Boxing Day, to Brisbane. Not sure we'd want to be there for the next few days, expected 44 deg today, rising to 46 later in the week.

Just been shopping at Toombul, think we might have to head back there again!!!

Where are you getting temperatures like that, Bobby? You must be watching the ABC news. Or perhaps Chanel 9. All temperatures seem to be embellished by 10 to 15%. Electronic media normally call them higher than BOM. Brisbane is really having a very mild summer so far. Only had the AC on 3 or 4 times.
But I'm wondering why Micheal left home. His home town is projected for 11C overnight and 27C tomorrow on Weather Chanel.
Cheers,
Kevin

Not indicating Brissy is having those temps, Kevin. Was talking about Winton, where someone has left the furnace door open......and someone else keeps stoking the fire as well.

Go by temps on Weatherzone, and living in Winton, they are very accurate. That's why I said didn't really want to be there at the moment.

Humidity was a bit ordinary at Wavell Heights yesterday........missed our split systems!!

Happy new year ;-)

Apologies Bob, I misread the area for which you were quoting temperatures. I've been watching temperatures in that area and they sure are high. The conditions out there have influenced our travel plans for January and February to stay to the east of the Great dividing Range.

It has been said that you can see 10% of New South Wales from the top of Mt Kaputar. I haven't been up there for 10-15 years and when I was there was no lookout, you had to scramble up the rocks to the trig station.

Lyn,

Was about 1960 when I was last there. Had the place to ourselves, and did the scramble up onto the top too.

Looks like we'll have to check it out again.

Here is the view from the summit of Mt Kaputar with the observation platform at the right hand edge. A good road all the way to the top. The facilities at the camping sites neat the top are the best I have seen at any national park.

Is the trig station still up there? Such luxury having an observation deck compared to a pretty good climb up the rocks. Somewhere I would have some photos of how it used to be which I'll try and find.

Here is another shot, Lyn. My wife is reading the plaque that is near the white obelisk which I think is the trig point. Still from a video.\ clip.
Cheer, Kevin.

Was wondering what the Warrumbungles were like after the fire. Some of the best walks in Australia are to be had through this area so it's a great pity . Not just for us folk that may blow through from time to time but for the locals who make their living from the tourist dollars the Warrumbungles would generate.

Thank you to all who replied. Thanks also for taking the time to post photos. Mt Kaputar was on our mind but with limited phone coverage, we only got most of the later posts on Mt Kaputar too late. We haven't been there and it has been on our list for some time to visit there. After the Warrumbungles we decided to head south east and as we had to be home this Saturday for a function, we thought we would do a NP a day and weave our way home. After the Warrumbungles NP, we stayed at Coolah Tops, Goulburn River NP, Hill End NP for New Years Eve and last night at Wollemi NP. I am going to post a brief blog of the parks, nothing startling and I will post it here as well! We have another week off after the weekend so we may head back up north and experience Mt Kaputar. Thanks again everyone. regards Michael.

Michael, when you do visit the part you must go to Sawn Rocks in the northern section of the park. (On the road that heads from Narrabri to Bingara). These would be the best 'organ pipes' we have seen.

This is a different section of the park to where Dawson Springs camping area is located.
