Brisbane to Darwin

There is a group of us travelling from Brisbane to Darwin in June. Does anyone know where free camping is between Brisbane and Darwin. Also any good attractions.

R & J,

There's so many free camps along that route, it'd take 3 hours to type a list for you. I'd suggest you get either a Camps 7, or download Wikicamps onto your smart phone, iPad etc. Wikicamps is just full of campsites, both free and pay type ones.

There's going to be some sites that are free, but are usually full by early afternoon, such as Fountain Springs, between Cloncurry and Mt Isa. Funny thing is people avail themselves of the free camp, with flushing toilets, then a few bag the camp on Wikicamps as being too dusty, too close to highway and too crowded. Can't please some people, eh!

If you're coming up through Longreach & Winton, there's afew attractions. Stockmans Hall of Fame, & Qantas Museum in Longreach, and in Winton, australian Age of Dinosaurs, and Waltzing matilda Centre are both worth a visit. Mt isa has the Combined Fossil Centre and Mine tour, as you travel into the city.

Check this site as there's heaps of info on here,

Bob.

Can't remember most of it.

Hi Robyn and John,

You will need to give us a bit more info before anyone can give you a sensible answer, either about camps or "attractions". What route are you taking, are you going off the bitumen, how much space do you need (is your group 3 vehicles/rigs or is it 10? Caravans or just single vehicles) and so on. What sort of "attractions" are you looking for - national parks, bowling clubs, fishing?

Have you checked out "Places" (look in the blue bar across the top of the page) where many camps and attractions are already listed? Also have a look through blogs for Queensland - use the red search button in the top RH corner. If you have a look through our blogs you will see some info about a good big free camp on Fletchers Creek about 50km north of Charters Towers. Link is here to get you started.

Also please don't discount the use of caravan parks, almost essential in some areas for various reasons.

Cheers,

Val.

Robyn and John

There are plenty of free camping spots but they fill up quickly. June is a popular time to travel. Brisbane to Darwin would take me hours to type a list. Looks in the camps book if you have one. Camps 7 is out now.

Good attractions. Not knowing what route you intend to take it is a difficult question. There are too many attactions to list. If you look on this site there is a wealth on info.

I would suggest you consider going through Lawn Hill. Well worth the detour (depending on your route)

When you get to Mataranka - Bitter Springs.

The Katherine Gorge (Nitmilik National Park) If you like bushwalking there are heaps of walks. There are also boat cruises and helicopter flights.

Litchfield National Park

Kakadu is well worth a visit.
