Ray, see if you can go on a tour of the School of the Air in Longreach.

Fantastic.

For starters the Qantas Founders Museum is open. You can invest several hours there.
Then there is the Stockman's Hall of Fame, another couple of hours.
Much more too. Just Google "Longreach" to view lots of info.
Cheers

We were out that way late last year. In addition to what Allan has said...the Stockmans Hall of Fame is excellent and worth nearly a day:

1. Winton - Waltzing Matilda centre. I thought is was boring and tacky but others reckon it was ok.
2. Lark Quarry - this is nearly a "must see" about 100kms (ish) from Winton and doable in a day trip.
3. Age of Dinosaurs - even better than Lark Quarry IMHO. And also worth a few hours.

You'd need to check opening hours etc...but most of all items 2 & 3 above are all dirt road access. There has been a bit of rain out there recently...so maybe not the ideal time.

Cheers

Chris

Not sure what's open but don't miss:
Longreach - at least 1/2 a day each at Qantas (fantastic) and Hall of Fame. In fact the Hall of Fame pass allows entry for 2 days
Winton - the outdoor cinema night show was interesting and very funny
Looks like they might be having some much needed rain in the area so you may be restricted to the black top

Check the weather conditions as they have been getting some good rain out there of late.

Ray,

In Winton, Australian Age of Dinosaurs, Waltzing Matilda Centre and Corfields & Fitzmaurice Store are all open. Due to rain, think road to Lark Quarry is only open to 4wd at moment. Also visit Searle's store in Winton, very interesting, friendly staff & a good range of EVERYTHING!

Not everything is open in Longreach as yet, but pretty sure Hall of Fame and Qantas Museum are both open. McKinnon & Co coach rides & other shows probably won't start till March or April. No boat rides on the waterhole at Thomson River as yet, as water has been very low, and tourist numbers are ditto. Believe the waterhole should be filling at this very moment.

Bob.

Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.
