I would give
Glen Helen tip a miss ( it is no resort ), we were there 15 years ago and had a great time, 3 years ago went back to spend some money ( camping bar and dinner) the service just to book a
camp site was 30 minutes asked to speak to the manager ( I could here him having a conversation in the next room ) the
toilet blocks were disgusting and the sewer pit was broken open.
20 minutes down the road is Elery Creek Big hole a lot cheaper per person cleaner and the facilities are much better, toilets BBQ the whole lot, it is a National park
camp ground go there instead trust me.

asked to speak to the manager ( I could here him having a conversation in the next room ) I left after a 15 minute wait, he wasn't interested.

Hi Stephen,
Pretty much the entire road from
Kings Canyon to
Glen Helen is a very good dirt road!
The first stretch is the
Mereenie Loop Road - then Namatjira Drive to
Glen Helen. Then it's bitumen all the way from
Glen Helen to
Alice Springs.
No problems driving a small 2WD up there if you drive to the road conditions unless it's rained recently.
BUT................ you will get stone chips on your car & bull dust inside it. Forewarned is forearmed lol!
Cheers,
Kevin.

We stayed (camper trailer) at
Glen Helen at end of June 2012 and did not mind it. Yes, it is not a resort. But it is in a nice location and the walk up to
the gorge was not too bad. See photo below. It was cold when we were there but in the resort we were able to sit on a nice lounge in front of the fire drinking some nice red wine. That was good! We found the showers good, not flash, but we have been to worse. So keep an open mind, don’t expect too much and don’t expect a resort. . Also we got our permit for the
Mereenie Loop Road from there. The
Mereenie loop Road was a bit rough when we did it, but as other have said, just drive to the condition. And please pull over to let others pass. We came across a few cars on the road that were just crawling because of the corrugations but being in a 4wd we needed to get to our speed and at times it was very difficult to pass due to the dust and they would not move over a bit.
