Hi! we are planning to travel from Alice Springs to Pt Hedland in May. The route we are planning is the Gary junction road to Kunawaritji, and from there either up the Wapet Road or along the Telfer Mine Road. Can anyone provide me with some details of the conditions of these roads and the permits required? We are planning to travel alone. Thanks Helen

Haven't been there for a couple of years but the road is generally fine, just keep an eye out for pothole drains in the left wheel track. Road condition and permit information is on this site. Fuel and food reasonably available, as are roadside camps. Jupiter Well is excellent camping, also Well 33 at Kunawarritji. The Telfer road past Punmu is excellent, mostly sealed on from Telfer. Carawine Gorge is a good camp, best camping is just down the track at the start of the airstrip. Enjoy!

Nice drive......
Permits are required from CLC for NT and from WA Ind Aff for WA. No dramas getting either. Plenty of fuel along the way from the communities (Kunawaritji is probably the most expensive).
Couple of slide shows.

Just a note re Carawine Gorge.
It is a stunning spot.
It is also part of Warrawagine Station, so is private property.
Please do the right thing.
Leave NOTHING behind.

Cheers,
Peter

Hi Helen

The Gary Junction route is a good one to take.Check my blogs from 2009. Follow links for all about permits. You need to apply a few weeks in advance for the Western Australian side permit.

It brings up a list of 85 Blogs for me Helen, but The Gary Junction Road will bring up the right Blog. At the bottom of the blog your can navigate to the previous or next blogs.
