We are planning to cross the
Simpson Desert travelling south north following the
Hay River, has anyone done this or has any information on it.

I have, not for the faint hearted especially if you haven't done any remote area travel.
There was an article about the area in question in a recent 4x4 australia mag, permits for the Aboriginal land are hard to get, the company mentioned in the article could help out if staying or travelling with them.

Thanks Peter for your answer we have dine quite a bit of remote travel and only just starting to look into this trip any notes and ideas you have on this trip would be an advantage to us.

Yes Midge , we are also planning to do the same trip in June 04 and are eager to have company . I have contacted Jol who will arrange necessary permit applications to cross traditional owners land next to Tarlton Downs . Would welcome return mail.

To fourplayfull, were not doing the south north crossing of the Simpson till Sep otherwise we could have joined you as we are not sure on wether or not we will be having any company either. We would appreciate any notes you might take down when you do do it. We will be away mid may till mid July as we are doing another trip north to
Cape York, how long does it take for Jol to get the permits to you, when we travelled the Gunbarrell last year it was only a couple of days with the 2 different Aboriginal Lands permits

It has been done lots of times. The
Sydney or NSW Landrover Club has done it and many other groups. Mainly North South crossings. I did it in 1987...not quite the
Hay River but further over to the west and probably a harder journey. Two Suzukis...we crossed the desert to
Birdsville in 7 days.
