Great little review of a great little town. We would always visit the gold panning in
Pine Creek whenever going past. The kids just loved it and managed to collect quiet a few sample bottles of gold fines. It is a shame the Canadian tour operator has died now as he was very good with the tour.
Gunlom
creek or Waterfall
creek as locals know it is a great spot for a
camp with hot showers and
toilets. The UDP project about 2km before the falls is still very dangerous. My neighbour in
Darwin was a environmental scientist working for
Ranger Mine and was checking out these old tailings - he told me to never go there as it is way too 'hot'. There are lots of other
places around
Kakadu that have the remains of 1960's uranium mining which are off limits as they are too 'hot'.
I went gold prospecting around
Pine creek - to no avail but there are plenty of small operations still making a living in the bush there although you will get a rifle shot over the head if you try to sneak on their property.
Good read - Thanks MH
