Instead of the highway from Alice to
Oodnadatta why not take the Old Ghan Railway route via
Chambers Pillar (
camp here for the night), Finke, Dalhousie and then
Oodnadatta. Alternatively, the Old
Andado is also an interesting route but more remote with not quite the same historical significance as the Old Ghan route.
You will have a ball on this trip.

Thanks for the advice, we are first timers at this outback/long distance touring, and our vehicle is not realy set up for the real rough stuff (not much ground clearance, and not much recovery gear) so I am a little nervouse about going too far off road. The route you mention sound great, but how rough is it.
