Comment: Mallacoota Day 2...walking, fishing, a campfire and fish dinner

Hi Heather & John,
Didn't realize you weren't heading home. Long haul from Mallacoota to Ceduna.!!!
Just a word of warning - the border quarantine station at the WA & SA border is dynamite. ( when we went through some years ago) Very officious young man made is open everything and I mean everything. We told him we were seasoned travellers and knew the rules which made him even more obnoxious. We got something to eat at the huge roadhouse/fuel stop there as we had anticipated getting some food at a roadhouse that was on the map only to find it closed, so by the time we got there we needed a food intake. Big mistake. Luckily someone in the roadhouse advised we not get our fuel here. Just over the border is Eucla. Fuel there a lot cheaper and also was a cafe with a real coffee machine and lovely homemade food.
But I know everything changes all the time on the road - so may not be the case now. Also found the accommodation at Eucla much cheaper then elsewhere on the Nullabor. Eyre Holdings seem to own everything on route so accom is expensive. Eucla was much more reasonable. We both regretted having even darkened the door of the border fuel /roadhouse.
Eucla is the way to go. You can let me know if things are not as I have told you.
We will be going that way again next year.
We are now only 4 weeks away from our trip Nthwards. Just having our awning repaired - Kev busy repacking crates.
I'm on the internet checking routes, accom, etc. Initially we were heading via the Flinders ranges but are now going through Canberra - a female artist by the name oF JESSIE TRAILL - a brilliant etcher - is being shown at the National Gallery so we will
deviate from our initial route to see her works. From there we will head Sydney way to catch up with some past travelling mates. Unfortunately one of them has a terminal illness so we can't meet them travelling anymore but we can certainly go and say G'day. Can't stand the thought of big city traffic. Will leave the van out of town and just go in the vehicle.
After that - back into the backblocks and on route to Cairns. Hopefully checking out Carnarvon Gorge and the Undarra Lava tubes.
Keep on travelling safely and keep on enjoying.

Will & Kev C.
