UHF problems

Ok, just fitted an older GME 3400. At first I thought the power cable was cactus but even with wires twisted together it gives sound for a nano second then goes silent. Also, the display is ' stuck' on channel 23 and displays ' ALARM' . It doesn't matter which button I touch or fiddle with on the face or the mic, nothing changes. So, stuffed ? Throw the &$(;@?!)$ thing in a lake ? Feeling frustrated ! Anyone got an idea ? Hope you do ! Thanks.
