What do you want to use the UHF for?

I generally use the little short 1/4 wave zero gain rubber antennas mounted on the roof. They give good clear reception and transmission over 5 to 10 km which is plenty for most applications and are almost indestructible as well as being cheap.
The last thing you need is to be able to hear everyone for a 30+km radius. It will drive you crazy.

Then we carry a long, high gain long range antennae that can be fitted for an emergency. Never used it yet.

Where you mount the antennae is at least as important as what you use.

Cheers,

Try prestige communications on the net. Some good prices on all things communications and mailed to your door. I've sourced all of my UHF equipment from them over the years.

Cheers Mick.

For the past 20 something years, I have been using the GME AE409L antenna for my UHF requirements.
It comes as a 6db gain, but included is a 9db kit that can be fitted to the antenna when required.

It is groundplane independant and can be laid over for low carparks if needed.

Available on ebay for around the $70.
