Probably been asked a few times before but as misguided as we are, we have a Petrol Prado and are planning a slow, leisurely journey up through Queensland to
Cairns and then across the
Savannah Way to
Broome.
Only concern, recognising that we will definitely be taking a number of turn off's along the way to less visited spots, is the availability of the dreaded fuel along the way.
We have identified a number of roadhouses along the way but you never can tell when off road!
Any insights would be appreciated - and yes the buy a diesel crowd can get on the band wagon but I have heard it all before and will do so when it is appropriate.

Most
places with diesel will have petrol. The biggest issue is range. You do not say if you are towing or what your range or fuel capacity is.
Doomagee - Hells
Gate - Borrooloola -
Roper Bar? (or
Cape Crawford -
Daly Waters)
Mataranka -
Katherine -
Timber creek - Kunnunurra -
Halls Creek -
Derby -
Broome
(
Gibb river road will depend on range/capacity but there are a couple of fuel
places across there.
If you ensure a fair range of say 600-800km even if by jerry cans you should not have any troubles.

Hello Alan,
Thanks for the advice and no not at this point in time will we be towing - fuel capacity is around 150 litres which would on bitumen get me around 800 klm when fully loaded.

Alan has given you the fuel outlets along the Gulf section of the
Savannah Way; we have not driven that yet. I have details of the distances between fuel and other
services from the Stuart Highway and through the
Kimberley, both via the Highway and the
Gibb River Road and this can be shared privately by request. Only you can calculate the added distances of the side tracks you intend to take. There are not many
places in Australia that you would not have fuel within 800 kilometres.

Camps 8 is generally pretty good. I know the Prados have a big fuel rank, so you shouldn't have too many problems. Just fuel up when you see some cheap fuel, it can get very expensive and at times unavailable, maybe worth considering taking 20 lts spare just in case.
