Timber Creek - NT

Timber Creek is a small historic town on the Victoria Highway in the Northern Territory's spectacular Victoria River region. Surrounded by dramatic red sandstone escarpments, ancient boab trees and rugged savannah country, the town is a popular stopover for travellers exploring Judbarra/Gregory National Park and the Savannah Way.The area is the traditional Country of the Ngaliwurru and Nungali Aboriginal people. Timber Creek takes its name from explorer Augustus Gregory, who collected timber from the creek in 1855 to repair his expedition boat. The town subsequently developed as a river port and service centre for surrounding cattle stations.Local attractions include the historic Timber Creek Police Station Museum, the Heritage Trail, Policeman's Point Lookout, the Nackeroo Memorial and Gregory's Tree, a heritage-listed boab bearing inscriptions from Gregory's 1855–56 expedition.The nearby Victoria River is renowned for barramundi fishing, while Judbarra/Gregory National Park offers excellent 4WD touring, bushwalking and remote camping opportunities. Highlights include the historic Bullita Homestead, Limestone Gorge, Jasper Gorge and the rugged tracks of the park's western section.**Town facilities** include fuel, basic groceries, takeaway food, hotel meals, accommodation, caravan parks, camping facilities, a health clinic and police station. Services are limited, so travellers should plan ahead and check fuel and supply availability.The town is accessible by sealed road year-round, although flooding may temporarily affect highway access during the wet season. Surrounding national park tracks are subject to seasonal closures.Timber Creek is an excellent base for exploring the Victoria River district and a convenient overnight stop between Katherine and Kununurra.
