Spoilt for choice mate. Heaps of room for everyone and a walk into town. No facilitites in the immediate camping areas so you'll need a porta-potti unless you're a fast runner. Heaps of toilets and shower facilities on the main street and nr the market stalls etc. Water available from tap on the main street. Very well organised.

There are various water taps along the areas between town & the race course. We filled up at one in 2013 & it is good water.

Water taps, rubbish skips and porta loos spread around the camping area next to the river - better set up than I expected. Easy walk to town but the 35k wind is stirring up the dust. Forecast to drop tomorrow.

Lot of room to camp down in the Diamantina channels, just out of town. Don't camp in the River if it looks like rain.........gets a bit muddy. :-)

Not likely to be much wood there, so bring your own if you want a fire.

We're going through a fortnight before and get as far away as we can.
I love the outback, but I'm selfish enough to share my journey with a select few and of course, the locals we encounter along the way.

It,s just one of those things on the bucket list,,as we get older we tend to spend a lot more time by ourselves...some times it,s fun to see people enjoying themselves...we have a fully self contained off road van and don,t want to be too far from the fun..

You will have a ball. I have been 4 times over the last 20 or so years and it has changed a lot since my first visit. We stayed at the caravan park last time and it was fantastic. Had the fire going every night with all the campers around calling in for a beer. No nights were to late and all went well.

I posted a reply a couple of hours ago but not here. In 2013 we were along the road out of own & filled the van with good water as there are water taps along the road between town & the race course.

Council organises several hundred acres of space for campers; bins, rows of toilets, and water points. Take firewood if you want some and think about wind direction before setting up camp. The town common gets very dusty and lots of traffic stirs it up although a water truck damps down the major connections a couple of times a day. A couple of years, council handed out rubbish bags to help people do the right thing. Standard behaviour is to do the right thing and clean up before you leave.

I prefer to camp close enough to walk to town. Transport to the course by bus costs a donation to RFD and is hassle free. Coppers are red hot on drink driving (as they should be).

Go with the flow for memories that last a lifetime.

About 120kms of bitumen west of Windorah, then rest is gravel to Birdsville, last time we were on that road.

Diamantina Shire grade the road before the races so should be good. It's a great drive through there.......keep left on the sandhill crossings! What it's like after the races is anyone's guess.:-)
