G'day Steve,
Sorry to dissappoint your mate, but the bonnett scoop, which is a genuine Nissan item (cost about $110-), is just there to feed a bit of extra air onto the turbo (which is a standard Nissan set up too).

Back in about December/ January I was asking on here about over-warming issues on the 4.2 T/D motor. There was quite a bit of discussion about it at the time.
On 1/1/2004 I got out the drill and jigsaw and marked out the bonnet before hacking away at it.

I have thought about fitting an intercooler and try to match it up with the hole I've already cut, but it seems the general opinion is that it would only give me about 5% increase in power and for the $$$$ involved, I'd probably be better off simply (?) fitting a bigger turbo. Anyway, the missus wants a new lounge suite, so any further dollars spent on the big Datto could result in me talking with a squeaky voice!!!LOL

As far as I know I think a mob called DENCO make a intercooler; not sure.

Cheers mate

You wouldn't have a part number for the scoop by any chance would you? I'm at the stage I will try anything to let the GQ run a bit cooler

G'day Gajm
Sorry mate I never kept the part number records. However, it is a common part and should be well known to the Nissan parts blokes.
Not sure whether you've heard of a bloke in Sydney.....Dave Bradley. He's known as "DB" and now runs a well kitted out GU 4.2TD and Ultimate Camper set-up, very similar to mine.
He used to have an equally well presented GQ 4.2 with a Safari Intercooled Turbo and cured his over heating problems by installing one of these same scoops too. However, his was installed facing rearwards and located closer to the front of the bonnet and on the centre line (ie: in the shallow hollow, about a foot behind where the front curves down). He has an email address as follows, which I have slightly altered by putting "AT" instead of "@" to avoid web crawlers getting locked on.

dbATplatinumadventures.com.au

I'm sure he would be okay about telling you his experiences with the scoop.

In my own case, I don't believe the scoop made any appreciable difference and it wasn't until I changed over the viscous fan that the problem ceased. However, even now the temp gauge still rises above half way if I try to maintain the 4.5tonne combined weight of my set-up at around 115k/h up a long hill.

When next summer comes along, if I'm still having any issues, I will seriously consider the larger alloy radiator option, but at $1100- it's gunna take some quick talking to convince SWMBO. LOL

Good luck.
