Hi there
Headed from Townsville to Toowoomba tomorrow and normally travel inland through charters, emerald and roma. Thinking of taking cutting across to Bauhiniaand then down to Taroom to cut off a bit of distance and for a change of scenery. How is that road ( Gregory development road I believe) these days? Is it sealed now?

Any input appreciated

Thanks

Have been through from Banana to Cracow and Taroom there a long time ago and would imagine that the road through to Taroom would be all sealed since the mine and gas fields are all there.

Been up that way some years ago, Matt. All sealed, so you shouldn't have any dramas. Think only very heavy rain will close it these days.

Just checked the map, maybe you mean the Fitzroy Dev Road, Matt? Haven't been on the Bauninia-Taroom section, but map suggests all dirt. Have been north from Bauhinia, mix of gravel and bitumen, get along at speed limit when we were on it last.

Travelling to the coast, Hervey Bay or Brissy, we've been going Emerald, Biloela, Gayndah, Kilkivan, to miss the 'Roos on the Warrego H'way and all traffic on the Bruce. Possibly a bit further but traffic is very light, and some good scenery. If you did this route, you could cut down through Nanango, Kingaroy to Toowoomba. Might be a bit further I'd say?

Good route Bob. We are out in this area often having friends at Kingaroy.
But you wouldn't want to go via Kingaroy when heading through Kilkivan and Nanango, it is off the direct route and slow getting through Kingaroy.
The road from Nanango via Crows Nest to Toowoomba is good and scenic.
Cheers

Thanks Allan, not familiar with route north of Toowoomba, so just "generalised".

Have a safe & merry Christmas, Allan. Never know might catch up with you in 2016.

Regards,
Bob

Thanks for the input everyone, its the Fitzroy development road that I'm talking about. So we would be going down to Rolleston across to Bauhinia and then cut down to Taroom directly across the development road rather than continuing east to Banana and then turning south again to Taroom

Last time I was down that road ( about two tears ago) it was rough and very dusty, but could be excellent now but if storms about I would give a miss and go to Moura, Theodore, then down to Taroom, in other words follow the sealed road. If however you want to go by the Fitzroy Development road just ask in Rolleston and you will get a up to date road report.
Cheers and have a good trip

So we ended up taking this road and it was fine. First 20 ks on the Bauhinia end was a little rough and rocky, but the vast majority of the rest was a nice smooth surface to drive on with just the occasional pot hole or rough patch. Only 20 ks at the Taroom end is sealed though.

Surface looked like it was clayey or very fine particles and I think it would get very slippery and boggy very quick if it was wet
