Hi Guys, we are planning a trip to Surveyor Generals Corner via Kalgoorlie, Laverton, Warburton & Mulga Park road to Marla in 2017.

I have an Elite Off Road Caravan and was wondering if the roads are suitable for the van.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks.

Hi Macca, I don't know much about the elite, but I went there from Warburton - Giles - Mulga Park Rd last September and the roads are in good condition. I averaged 80kmph from Giles to the turnoff to the corner towing my Tvan. I am sure you could even get a little faster if you wanted on the GCR. I am sure your van will bog it in.

You will need a permit for the general area and he corner from the Ngaanyatjarra lands council.
Hema maps say you also need to pay $50 and get local permission to go to the corner. The lands council told me that no such condition exists so long a you specify it on their permit. Also the phone number never answered or returned a call in the 3 months I was calling it.

The turn off is at 26°1'19.0"S, 128°57'41.5"E or -26.02194, 128.96153 and the track is 5km in to the NW from here. You can take your van all the way in. Veer left about 4km in and keep the house to the left of you. There are 2 corner markers about 100m apart, the second one is the correct one but was missing the brass plate when we went there.

Also you will probably have to exit to the west, it is extremely difficult to get permission to continue on the Mulga Park Rd into SA. You can go back through Blackstone which has a general store and fuel, but I wouldn't camp near town.

Hi Macca
We went into the corner last month (Feb 2016), the Mulga Park Road in is in great condition, actually better in most places than The GCR, there is no longer any camping at the Corner as an Elder has been buried at the camp ground. We left our camper at Giles and were in and back again in about 5 hrs. There are 2 corner posts as some one made a slight mistake and there is actually a dog leg in the WA border at that point.

At Giles? That's a long way from SGC unless I'm having a senior moment.

Giles weather station or Warrakurna roadhouse campground is approx. 150km from the corner. Must have been a senior moment.

I think I had one too (senior's moment) . Seemed like a lot further than that. Was just working from rusty memory (1972), we came down a track from Docker River just inside the WA border(*) - NOT the road you'd take approaching from Giles - and camped overnight at the junction of that track and MPR, just west of the Wingellina community.

(*) The track was shown on the 250,000 "army" map of the day (aka Natmap nowadays) so we used it. Departed the "GCR" NT-side of the border. Not sure if the transit permits we had covered that route, but the guy in the DR store suggested it to us. Now I'll probably have people tell us there is/was no such track.

Zippo

I think the track still exists but is marked as a PRIVATE TRACK, for community use only. Would have been quite an adventure back in 72. Now its just another dirt highway, but well worth a trip.

Len, it WAS an adventure. Mate and I in our 20's in my (2WD) Fiat 125 sedan, with long-range tanks, sump-guard, roo-bar/lights, compass and a pile of 250-thous. Oh, and an Engel MRFT514 ;-)

We didn't go to SGC. It was just the suggested "scenic" route from DR to Warburton. (The current "Blackstone" facilities were non-existent back then.)
