HELP - we are due to leave this Sat from Sydney and head down the Oodnadatta and into the Simpson for a west to East crossing. As of yesterday PM SA DPI still has most of that area closed.

BOM suggests 5 days of clear weather - will it open in time - what are peoples experiences?

Don't you feel for all the people going to or attempting to get to the concert this weekend from the southern states, both Tracks closed.....

Nope. This is exactly why we go that way in July to August. Never had any issues with rain.

And no headaches from screaming Jimmy.

Love your assessment of Jimmy, Phil. I think performers and attendees should be charged with disturbing the peace and locked up. No aspirations to be any where near Birdsville in early July or September. Just not on my bucket list.

Cheers,

Kevin

sweetnam, how long is that piece of string springs to mind, who knows.
It's always a crap shoot up there with weather.

Just have to keep an eye on the SA outback Road Conds page and pray.
Or better, have a back up plan.
Maybe roads are open from Coober Pedy, or Marla, or even go up to Kulgera on the blacktop and down to Mt Dare via New Crown of necessary.

Once in the desert you are usually pretty right, apart from claypans south of Poeppel Cnr if there's been rain there, and of course the tracks out of Birdsville.
Often it is best to exit in your case (to Sydney) via Windorah and down through western QLD.

Good luck, the desert is beautiful with wildflowers at the moment, just completed Madgian Line in the North Simpson, was so green all through there.

sweetnam,
I think you will be OK. Oodnadatta track has been closed a lot recently, and I would not expect much luck from that route, but as said, the road in from Finke should open up with the clear weather expected. You could head to Birdsville and head in to the Simpson from there, tour around, camp and enjoy. I prefer the East any way. You don't really need to cross it.

Thanks for all the feedback - i have been watching the DPTI and Oodnadatta has opened so we should be ok with clear skies for the next few days.....

With school kids we dont have the luxury of travelling July to Aug outside of the school break so off we go...
