Hi, we are taking the caravan to Tassie early January on a day sail which arrives around 6pm.
Looking for recommendations for places to stay upon arrival, say within 50 klm's. We are conscious of the fact that many will be doing the same. Prefer "free camping" which includes donations to worthy causes.

Cheers

I recently went to Tassie on the same day type run. Factor in the distinct possibility you will not be leaving the boat until around 7;30PM. We left Melb nearly 1/2 hr late and with bigger seas the on land time was just after 7:30PM.
That may alter your plans so evening travel in unfamiliar surrounds doesn't happen.
But, you may enjoy the adventure.

Try Forth, there's plenty of room. Approx 20 mins drive east of Devenport. Many use it as dept / arrival from the Spirit.

If you have to go to a caravan park, the one at Latrobe is quite good.

We stayed at Horsehead creek its off Devonport road just before the Mersey River bridge 10 minutes from the boat and its a free camp
Easy to find as you approach the river there is a large shed on the left and the entry is between the shed and the bridge there is a boat ramp sign proceed down to the car park and turn left and then left into the camp the large grassed area alongside the entry road is the free camp
We stayed there it was great
Cheers Kev

Missed the bit about pre-booking supposed to be needed plus $10 per night.

Lots of options Racy.Latrobe can get full. A closer option than Horseshoe Creek is Girdlestone Park in East Devonport, not far from the terminal. Both are Permit parking ($10).

"Council does allow permits for limited
camping for “fully self-contained” motor homes
and caravans at Girdlestone Park, East Devonport
and Horsehead Creek, Quoiba.
Permits must be obtained from the Devonport
Visitor Information Centre on Formby Road
For late arrivals permits can be arranged by phone (03) 6424 4466"

We arrived in good time and (February) had plenty of light to find our destination. But we were lucky, having a paddock on a friend's farm near Sheffield to find our way to.

Port Sorell Caravan Park is good value and well located. Very nice seaside/river area about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal at East Devonport.
