Hi

Just in the last stages of plannng our trip through the Simpson and then on to Alice Springs before then doing the touristy parts of Central Aust.

Our Simpson crossing will be East to West this time. The part i'm weighing up is what route to take from Mt Dare. Should we go via Finke, old Ghan line, Chambers Pillars or should we go via the Old Andado track.

Which is the more interesting and scenic. We have about 2 or 3 days for this part of the trip. Im assuming they would both have a similar travel time? What makes this the best route?

Thanks for your thoughts
Regards Geoff

Have travelled both a few times now. Both are good. Old Andado track you get to see the Clarke Home (if it's still open to the public) & Mac Clarke Reserve & a nice drive into Alice via Santa Teresa.
The Old Ghan on the other hand is full of history with Chambers Pillar as a bonus.
Have spent a night at Both Mac Clarke & Chambers Pillar on different trips. Enjoyed them both.... Love that country. If I had to choose I would go the Old Ghan again.
Cheers
Paul

Hi Geoff,
Haven't done Old Andado but can recommend the Old Ghan Line especially the side trip to Chambers Pillar. Top camp for the night and a great sight to wake to and walk up in the morning. Also the Geographical Center west of Finke is good for the been there photo op.
Cheers,
Ross.

As mentioned, both have their sights . . . Old Andado homestead is open as usual, we'll be staying there on Sunday night, ready for a Geo crossing starting Monday :)

If you haven't done either Old Ghan / Chambers, or Binns Tk before, just flip a coin and decide that way, you'll have to come back and do the other route next time !! :)

Thank you everyone for your advise and suggestions.

It seems there are some highlights for either option. Might be a case of flipping a coin when we get to Mt Dare. ????

Thanks everyone

Yep, but ensure either way enough fuel to get to Alice . . . for example you will likely just fill up with enough to get you from Mt Dare to Alice, as fuel in Finke or Maryvale (old Ghan route), or Santa Teresa (Binns Tk, but only 84km out anyway) is probably similar in price.

Finke is possibly a little less than Mt Dare if going that way, but check opening hours / days 0889560966. Mt Dare to Finke is 105km.
Old Ghan route (including the must do Chambers pillar) Mt Dare to Alice is 440km, or Finke to Alice 335km.

Mt Dare to Alice is 427km.
